Joshimath is a town that is located in the state of Uttarakhand in the District of Chamoli. The place is highly revered by Hindus and it is an important pilgrimage center in the country. Many devotees and travelers can be seen in the area during the pilgrim season. There are many temples and other religious sites that are located in the town as well.

The town serves as a base for travelers who are looking to take a trek to some of the higher regions. One can reach the Valley of Flowers by taking a trek from the town of Joshimath. There are many hotels and dharamshalas that are located in the town as well and these cater to the visitors.

There is an 8th century matt called the Adi Guru Sri Sankaracharya and this is one of the most popular places in the town. There are many temples that are located here as well and one can see them all around the town.

For the ones among you who are interested in adventure sports, there is a place called Auli that is located around 16 km from the town. This is one of the few places where you can experience sports such as ice skiing. The Nanda Devi Park is also another tourist spot in the region.

Joshimath is mainly a military area. The Ibex Brigade of Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) have set up their base there. It seems there wasn’t a proper road to Auli until recently because the military did not give permission for building roads. Army vehicles and soldiers are a common sight. The army vehicles have metal chains around the tyres making it easy to drive in the snow. The Ibex Brigade has even initiated a ‘Clean n Green Joshimath/Auli’ campaign along with the locals there.

Joshimath, also known as Jyotirmath, is a serene hill town nestled in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India. Perched at an elevation of 6,150 feet (1,875 meters), this picturesque destination offers a blend of natural beauty, religious significance, and adventure opportunities. Let’s delve into the details of Joshimath, covering everything from its history to practical travel information.

1. History and Significance

1.1 Ancient Roots

Joshimath has a rich historical background dating back to the 7th to 11th centuries C.E. During this period, the Katyuri kings ruled the region from their capital at “Katyur” (modern-day Baijnath) valley in Kumaon. The Katyuri dynasty, founded by Vashudev Katyuri, left its mark on the area. The ancient Basdeo Temple in Joshimath is attributed to Vasu Dev, who initially followed Buddhist practices but later embraced Brahminical traditions. Adi Shankara (788-820 CE) is also associated with the spread of Brahminical practices in the region.

1.2 Divine Legend

According to local lore, King Vasudev, a devotee of Lord Narsingh (an avatar of Lord Vishnu), encountered the deity in disguise. His wife offered food to the disguised god, and after consuming it, the god rested in the king’s room. When the king returned from hunting, he mistook the divine guest for an intruder and cut off the left hand. To everyone’s surprise, milk flowed from the wound instead of blood. The god revealed his true identity and cursed the king, leading to the relocation of the capital from Joshimath to Kartikeyapur (modern-day Baijnath). The temple statue of Narsingh still bears the mark of the severed hand.

1.3 Past Challenges

Joshimath faced significant challenges during the 2021 Uttarakhand flood and its aftermath. The town, situated along a running ridge, experienced sinking due to its geographic location. Despite these difficulties, Joshimath remains resilient.
