Dehradun: Despite witnessing some good rain spells in May, Uttarakhand has recorded a 30% rain deficit in the three-month-long premonsoon season that stretches from March 1 to May-end. According to the regional meteorological centre, Uttarakhand received 107.1 mm of rainfall against the normal 153.2 mm during the period, registering a departure of -30%.
Out of total 13 districts, 11 districts of the state received less than normal rainfall, except Pithoragarh and Bageshwar district of Kumaon region, which recorded 3% and 16% surplus rainfall, according to the Met office data. Pauri Garhwal remained the driest district with -53% rain deficit, followed by -51% in Nainital, -49% in Haridwar, -48% in Chamoli, -44% in Almora and -36% each in Champawat and Uttarkashi district.
During the first two months- March and April- of the pre-monsoon period, the Himalayan state witnessed dry conditions with -80% and -96% less than normal rain respectively. In fact, the 30-day period between mid-March and mid-April remained warmest in the last three-decades due to prolonged dry spell, said Bikram Singh, director, regional meteorological centre.
However, in May, Uttarakhand recorded 53% surplus rainfall due to a few decent spells of rainfall across the state, balancing out the overall seasonal rain deficiency.
Meanwhile, the Met office has predicted dry weather for the next one week, barring isolated activity in the higher reaches of hilly districts. "Dry weather will prevail till at least June 8-10. The temperature levels will once again start rising and might breach the 40 degree Celsius mark in the plains and 30-degree Celsius in the hills," said Bikram Singh.
