Despite the ban, Char Dham pilgrims using plastic bags on yatra

Haridwar: Char Dham pilgrims passing through Haridwar and traders in the district have been using polythene bags despite a ban on such bags say, environmentalists. They added that the plastic menace has increased since the start of the Char Dham yatra.
Activists termed it a matter of concern as a large quantity of used polythene bags ends up in the Ganga, contaminating its waters. Not just polythene bags but other plastic products like plastic cans and mats are also being widely sold to tourists in Haridwar.
Ratanmani Dobhal, a Haridwar resident, told, "Municipal corporation has the responsibility to stop the use of plastic bags and other products but no action is being taken. The continuous use of plastics causes Ganga pollution and environmental degradation."
Meanwhile, the authorities of the Haridwar municipal corporation have claimed that stern action will be taken against trackers using plastic. "We seize plastic products from time to time. Public participation is also needed to stop the use of plastic bags," Dayanand Sarswati, commissioner of Haridwar Municipal Corporation, said.
