It is believed in Hindu mythology that the govardhan hill was lifted by lord Krishna on his index finger to save his village and villagers. It is also known for it's parikrima of 21 km . Lots of pilgrims come here for parikrima on foot and many pilgrims who can not walk on foot. there is a facility to do the parikrima by taxi and car also.A legend has that, Nanda father of Lord Krishna was busy for preparing the rituals to pray rain God. Indra was considered as rain god, Lord Krishna objected for this. He opined that there was no need for rituals such as sacrifice etc. for natural phenomenon’s like rain. Indra got angry and He flooded the town with heavy rain. Lord Krishna in response lifted the Govardhan hill with his little finger and held it for 7days. All the cows,cowherds and people of the place got protected from the wrath of Indra’s rain. Indra accepted the defeat and recognized Lord Krishna as supreme.The temple is big and the entrance is directly to the road. One can see the image of the Lord lifting the hill above the temple. There is a big hall and the end of the hall there is image of Lord Krishna. Just right at the entrance if one goes down the steps we can see a’SHILA’ placed where people will be doing abhisheka with milk. This they claim as Govardhana Shila. There is also a platform where pandith’s are be seated with paan filled mouth selling ‘prasad’. One can buy Prasad to take home.You can visit Goverdhan and the best shop for eating kachori .samosa and sweet . You can visit Giriraj sweet apposite police thana. You can also get best ghaver and other sweets as well. Also there is Brijwasi shop close to it .you can also get good verity of sweet and nasta.
The temple is open from 5.30am to 11am & from 4pm to 10pm.
