Introduction

Savandurga, located approximately 60 km west of Bengaluru in Karnataka, stands as one of the largest monoliths in Asia. This iconic hill fort, composed of granite rocks shaped by wind and water over millions of years, offers a challenging yet rewarding trekking experience. Rising to an elevation of 1,226 meters above mean sea level, Savandurga commands stunning views of the surrounding Deccan Plateau.

Origin of Name

The name “Savandurga” is derived from two hills: Karigudda (the black hill) and Biligudda (the white hill). Historical records from 1340 AD mention the hill as “Savandi.” Another view attributes the name to “Samantadurga,” associated with a governor under Achutaraya at Magadi. However, no inscription confirms this theory. Savandurga served as the secondary capital for the Magadi rulers, including Kempegowda. In 1791, Lord Cornwallis captured it from Tipu Sultan’s forces during the Third Anglo-Mysore War.

Climbing and Adventure

Savandurga offers a dozen climbing routes on its south face. Rock climbers and adventurers frequent the locale, although some routes have long runouts and face intense heat when the sun rises. Cave explorers also find interest in the area.

Flora and Fauna

The hills are home to endangered yellow-throated bulbuls and were once inhabited by long-billed vultures and white-backed vultures. Other wildlife includes sloth bears and leopards.
