The Nayakas, also known as Palegar Nayakas, fortified the structure between the 15th and 18th centuries. The fort briefly fell to Hyder Ali in 1779 but was recaptured by the British forces two decades later during their conflict with Tipu Sultan.

The fort’s interconnecting tanks ensured a constant water supply, making it impervious to shortages.

Within the fort, 18 temples grace the upper section, while a massive temple dominates the lower fort. The Hidimbeshwara temple, the oldest and most intriguing, stands as a testament to the region’s rich religious heritage.
