Terai grapples with a heatwave, the mercury soars to 42 degrees Celsius

Rudrapur: Terai region is facing severe heatwave conditions as the maximum temperature crossed 42 degrees Celsius on Saturday, with no relief expected till next week, said RK Singh, a meteorologist at GB Pant University, Pantnagar. The temperature is likely to increase in the coming days, Singh added. Heatwave conditions prevailed in most parts of the Terai region with the minimum temperature on Saturday settling at 25 degrees Celsius. According to Singh, the temperature is expected to hover around 43 degrees Celsius till June 9 and may dip by 2 notches after June 10, as the region may receive light rainfall. The mercury soared to 41 degrees Celsius in Rudrapur, Udham Singh Nagar district, on Saturday and is likely to touch 43 degrees Celsius in the next few days.
Singh further said that there will be no respite from heat wave-like conditions till June 25, when the monsoon is expected to arrive in the state. Meanwhile, Dr. Gaurav Agrawal, a senior physician, said, "Daily wagers, construction workers, and all those who usually work outdoors, are vulnerable to such weather conditions."
