State to introduce modern farming tech in 9 hill districts

Dehradun: In one of the major steps to address the needs of locals, the watershed management directorate has now decided to generate livelihood for villagers living in the nine hill districts of Uttarakhand as per the changing environment with the 'climate responsive agriculture system'.
So, as per the World Bank approved project - Uttarakhand Climate Responsive Rainfed Farming Project, the state government has now decided to introduce modern technologies and innovative ways to bring source of employment at their doorstep keeping changing climate at the core of planning. Villagers will be provided different options of farming and livestock rearing so that the border area and mountains are not hit by the heat of climate change. The issue of migration inflicting border villages has gone deeper into the system. The villagers often claimed that it is crop raiding by the animals and scanty production from farming that they are moving out of their villages. "We will promote, less water-intensive crops in Uttarakhand and lay the entire thrust of moving our farmers to horticulture products, veggies, cash crops, poultry and goat farming up in the mountains as it require very less water and the natural environment of mountains is conducive to such activities. The farmers should not feel that changing climate is hitting them, we know even the mountains are heating up. We will motivate them to move out of traditional methods of earning from farms and livestock as the World Bank has sanctioned Rs 1,000 crore for it," said Dr DS Rawat of the planning section of watershed management. Uttarakhand is known for its millets, pulses and rice. Even in the hills people have started complaining of huge variation between day and night temperature impacting their overall lifestyle, thereby earnings. It will be for the first time that in such a large scale, mountain people are being shifted to other kinds of farming.
