No. Of lions up from 674 to 750 in coastal areas of Gujarat

Ahmedabad: Asiatic lions are fast expanding their footprints to the coastal areas of Greater  Gir. The latest Poonam Avlokan (estimation during a full moon) by the forest department reveals that the population of these lions has gone up to 750, up from 674 in 2020. This is an 11% rise, compared to a 27% rise in the previous count.
The report is yet to be made public.
Coastal areas saw a rise of 38%, with the population of lions growing from 87 in 2020, sources privy to the official findings said. The growth in population was mainly reported in the coastal areas of Bhavnagar, Amreli, and Gir Somnath.
Forest officials said Sutrapada, Kodinar, Una, and Veraval areas are in the southwestern coastal belt, while Rajula, Jafrabad, and Nagashree areas constitute the southeastern coastal belt. Both the belts recorded a rise in the number of lions over previous years.
The Poonam Avlokan, sources said, reported no significant increase in the number of lions in Gir Sanctuary and the National Park, with only a likely marginal increase, from 334 to 340.
