Kumaoni should be standardized & made an official language

Pithoragarh: At a two-day seminar organized by 'Asali Kudali', a monthly Kumaoni language magazine, speakers demanded that Kumaoni be included in the eighth schedule of the constitution, making it one of the country's official languages. Speakers also said that the language is currently spoken in nine different dialects.
The language is spoken by 2.2 million people, according to 2011 census data. "People in six districts speak Kumaoni. According to UNESCO, the language needs conservation efforts," Dev Singh Pokhariya, former HoD, Hindi department, SSJ University (Almora campus), pointed out. Meanwhile, Hayat Singh Rawat, editor of the monthly Kumouni magazine "Paharu", said that Kumouni makes it different from other Aryan languages.
