Indo-Nepal border to be closed for 72 hours in Champawat for bypolls

Pithoragarh: The Indo-Nepal international border in Champawat district will be closed for 72 hours from May 28 to 31 for assembly polls in the constituency on May 31, officials said on Monday. Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who had lost the recent state polls from the Khatima seat, is contesting the bypolls from the constituency to remain in office.
Champawat district magistrate (DM) Narendra Singh Bhandari held a virtual meeting with his counterpart in Nepal's Kanchanpur district on Monday to request for closure of the borders. The constituency has two movement points Banbasa and Tanakpur.
Bhandari informed his counterpart from Nepal about the poll schedule from 7 am to 5 pm on May 31 and hence the border would remain shut from 5 pm on May 28 to 5 pm on 31st May 2022.
The official from Nepal thanked Bhandari for cooperation by Champawat district authorities during the recent Nepal local body elections held on May 13. The international border had been closed in Uttarakhand for the local polls in Nepal.
