Hemkund Sahib opens with curbs on daily numbers

Dehradun: Portals of one of the most revered Sikh shrines. Hemkund Sahib opened in Uttarakhand's Chamoli on Sunday with a daily cap on the number of devotees. They were closed during winter for six months. A maximum number of 5,000 people can visit the shrine daily this year. Located at a height of around 15,200 feet near the valley of flowers in the Garhwal Himalayas, Hemkund Sahib is linked to the tenth Sikh Guru Gobind Singh.
The first batch of 5000 pilgrims, led by the "panjpyaras" and "granthis" of the gurdwara left Ghaghariya, the base camp for the six-kilometer trek to Hemkund, early on Sunday morning to open the gates of the shrine at 10:30 am, situated near the Hemkund Sarovar in the middle of snow-capped mountain ranges.
The Guru Granth Sahib was brought to the gurudwara and the rituals were completed with the recitation of the Sukhmani Sahib. Besides, the portals of the nearby Lokpal temple were also opened for the devotees.
Meanwhile, the Char Dham Yatra is in full swing with over eight lakh pilgrims having already visited the yatra since the opening of portals of the four shrines- Kedarnath, Badrinath, Yamunotri, and Gangotri.
