Heavy rain damaged roads, standing crops in Almora dist

Almora: Heavy rain wreaked havoc in several parts of the Almora district on Wednesday afternoon. Due to the downpour, Gadre in Sarmoli of Deghat area came in spate and a large portion of the Bungidhar motorable road was washed away, severing contact between places in Kumaon and Garhwal.
Standing crops were destroyed, locals said. The gush of water also damaged the Deghat-Bharsoli drinking water project.
Locals have demanded the immediate resumption of the motorable road and the drinking water connection be fixed. Those losing large quantities of crops to inclement weather must get adequate compensation from the authorities, they added. Surmoli village head Sheela Rawat said, "Residents have demanded to get the motorway fixed soon and the drinking water line prepares so that supply is restored. We would also like the administration to take stock of the damage caused to crops at the earliest so that they receive timely compensation."
Almora district disaster management officer Prashant Kumar said that a team has been sent to the spot and the affected road will be repaired soon.
