Fake hotel booking: Raj man dupes pilgrims of Rs.30L, held

Dehradun: A 22-year-old man, identified as Hakimuddin from Rajasthan's Bharatpur district, was arrested by Chamoli police for allegedly duping Char Dham pilgrims of around Rs 30 lakh under the pretext of booking hotel rooms.
The scam came to the fore when a man from Thane (Maharashtra) approached Badrinath police after he was cheated of Rs 6,000.
The man was promised a hotel room booking in Badrinath. In his complaint, the man said that he paid money (via an online platform) to a person posing as the hotel owner. However, when he reached the place, there was no trace of the accused and the hotel management clarified that there was no booking in his name.
"On receiving the complaint, I set up a team led by a senior sub-inspector rank-officer to investigate the case. During the probe, we tracked the phone numbers used in similar fraud cases and zeroed down on the location of the accused in Rajasthan. Subsequently, a team was sent to nab the culprit," Shweta Choubey, superintendent of Police (SP), Chamoli said.
Police have found that Hakimuddin had been pulling off such online fraud for the last couple of years. He duped several people during the Covid lockdown as well. Earlier, a scam involving helicopter bookings for Badrinath and Kedarnath was busted by Chamoli police and a man was arrested from Bihar for his alleged involvement in the case.
