Bagwal to be celebrated on Aug 12 this yr

Pithoragarh: The traditional 'Bagwal" festival will be celebrated at Devidhura temple in Champawat on August 12 this year. The announcement was made by the Barahi temple committee on Thursday.
Kheem Singh Lamgarai, chairman of the temple committee, told, "The festival is celebrated on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan every year. This time, we expect a greater turnout after two years of the Covid-19 pandemic."
As part of the festival, devotees pelt stones at each other as the belief is that blood must be shed in order to appease the presiding deity, Barahi Devi. After the Uttarakhand HC's intervention in 2014, the stone pelting was ordered to be stopped although sporadic instances still continue to occur.
