Adi Kailash Yatra Tour Package : Chhota Kailash Yatra Tour Package

In the wake of the construction of a highway near the Indo-Tibet border in Uttarakhand which is expected to be completed by next year-end, Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN), the nodal agency for tourism activities in the Kumaon region, on Thursday announced that it had entered into an arrangement with a travel agency to start tour packages for pilgrims who wish to undertake the Adi Kailash yatra.

According to KMVN, the pact will help in increasing the pilgrim footfall at the site, referred to as “Chhota Kailash”. It will also boost local employment opportunities as those undertaking the yatra will be accommodated at homestays.

The holy mountains can be visited via a motorable road without trekking once the highway is complete, KMVN general manager AP Bajpai said. "We have constantly been striving to connect this yatra to more and more people and hope that those who were unable to travel to Adi Kailash due to the difficult walking trek of 200 km will now be able to visit via the new road which is being constructed up to Nabhidhang and Jolingkong. This will help remove walking component in journey."

Notably, Union highways minister Nitin Gadkari had told Parliament earlier this week that the highway - which would also ease accessibility from Pithoragarh district to Kailash Mansarovar -- would be ready by the end of 2023. As per mythology, Adi Kailash, located near the Indo-Tibetan border in the Pithoragarh district, was Shiva's first stop when he came to marry Goddess Parvati at a wedding procession. The mountain is often referred to as a "replica" of Mount Kailash. There is a lake nearby named after Parvati, Parvati Sarovar, which is considered the goddess's bathing spot. Surrounded by the borders of three countries, India, Nepal, and Tibet, the place has also been referred to in the Mahabharata, Ramayana, and Brihat Purana.

It is believed that while Lord Shiva resides at Mount Kailash, Adi Kailash is his "second home".

With another year of uncertainty over the Kailash Mansarovar yatra due to Covid concerns, Adi Kailash is being touted as the "best option for pilgrims". Mount Kailash is in the Tibet autonomous region in China and only a few people can visit it, either through KMVN or via Indian tour operators on a group visa. There are no such restrictions for Adi Kailash, KMVN officials said.

Speaking about the packages on offer,  "We will be offering various options to the devotees, including customized trips and facilities such as havans and pujas, allowing them to spend as much time as they'd like at the site." He added that the eight-day yatra will start from Kathgodam and cover Adi Kailash, Om Parvat, Parvati Mukut, Brahma Parvat, Sheshnag Parvat, Shiva temple, Parvati Sarovar, Gaurikund, Patal Bhubaneshwar Pandava fort, Kunti Parvat, Pandava Parvat, and Ved Vyas cave.
