951 ha of cropland damaged by animals in last 3 years

Dehradun: In the last three years, a total of 951.24 hectares of cropland have been damaged by wild animals and a compensation of Rs 1.96 crore compensation has been provided to farmers across the hill state. This was informed by forest minister Subodh Uniyal during the ongoing assembly session. Around 306 hectares of cropland were damaged in 2019-20, 435 hectares in 2020-21, and 209 hectares in 2021-22, he said. Following that, a compensation of Rs 83.93 lakh was given to farmers in 2019-20, Rs 72.581 lakh in 2020-21, and Rs 40.11 lakh in 2021-22.
"We have different slabs for compensation like we give Rs 25,000 per hectare for cane fields and Rs 8,000 per hectare for others. Our teams assess the loss and thereafter, the compensation is given to the farmers," the minister said in his reply to a question by Congress MLA from Haridwar Rural, Anupama Rawat in the assembly Question Hour session.
Meanwhile, BJP MLA from Vikasnagar Munna  Singh Chauhan asserted that it was compensation and should not be considered a charity. "We are not giving a charity to the farmers or doing them a favor. The compensation should be on the present value and the policy, which was framed several years back needs to be changed," he said, adding that, "the compensation amount should be directly linked with the minimum support price(MSP)."
