'High alert' in Rudrapur after tigress and two cubs spotted

Rudrapur: Forest department officials are on "high alert" ever since the movement of a tigress with her two cubs was caught on camera in the Chhatarpur area, 6-km from Udham Singh Nagar district headquarters, Rudrapur, on Saturday night. As a precautionary measure, three teams have been set up by the department for the big cat's safety and also to ensure that no human-animal conflict incident takes place in the area.
The news has already caused panic as this is the first such sighting near the city in recent times. Thi big cat was spotted at 11:30 pm by a railway employee at the Chhatarpur rail crossing on Haldwani Road. He had captured photographs of the big cat on his mobile and sent them to his department's Whatsapp group, which later went viral. Forest department officials, subsequently, took cognizance of the matter.
Since the area is near a densely populated area with over 50 residential colonies and some industrial units, the forest department has issued an advisory asking local residents "not to pass through this place alone at night". Divisional forest officer of the central division of Terai forests, Abhilasha Singh, said, "We have issued an advisory asking villagers not to enter forest areas alone. Three teams have been formed to locate and track the big cat family. Nearby police stations have been put on alert."
