“Beautiful river and chilling water - river rafting is must”
Reviewed 4 March 2017
River Beas is a beautiful river flowing amidst white pebbles and stones all along the way to Manali. If you are coming by road from Delhi / Chandigarh, this river will join you from Mandi and will be there right till Manali.

White river rafting is very popular in river Beas and is done at a number of places at Kullu - Manali way. There are a couple of things that any visitor must note while going for river rafting here:

1) There is a rafting point in Kullu city where your cab driver might take you but don't stop there to do rafting. The guys over there will charge exorbitantly high plus the water there is less to enjoy rafting. Ask your cab driver to take you to ahead towards Manali where you will find a number of rafting camps.

2) These rafting camps are authorized by state government and will have boards indicating their number. Actually, all these rafting camps are type of an union and will form a cartel to ask high prices to the visitor. We tried to negotiate for prices at the first camp and didn't agree to do it with him because he was asking a very high rate - that guy actually asked a couple of his friends running similar camps nearby to let us not do rafting at lower price! This was highly unprofessional on their part and all visitors should be careful about this. Finally, we managed to find a nice guy who took us for rafting at a resaonable price.

3) We were just two of us so took the entire raft with 2 pilots and it was extreme fun in the chilling waters of Beas. Our pilots actually asked us to kneel down and hang our face out of the raft to experience the chilliness of water. This is not possible in a group as the raft would be already loaded.

4) There are usually two packages that these guys offer - rafting for 3 kms and 7 kms. 3 kms stretch is actually very small and the stretch ends at the time when you start enjoying the activity. I would suggest to put in a littely more money and go for 7 kms stretch. Couple charges for 3 kms stretch in October were around Rs. 800 - 1000 and Rs. 1200 - 1500 for 7 kms stretch. Rates would be lower if you are in a group.

5) Lastly, it is not advisable to do rafting after 5 pm as it gets dark and water gets more chilled. Plan your schedule to reach there by noon and enjoy the madness of river Beas.

In all, a must do activity though with a watchful eye and good negotiations with the rafting folks.

“Try the White water Rafting .. Must Do !!”
Reviewed 27 October 2016
White water rafting on river Beas is a definite must. Make sure that you try the full length 12 km or atleast 9km rafting. It's definitely fun. We hired 1 raft for myself, wifey and my 9 year old son and enjoyed it to the fullest. You also get to swim in the cold water for a couple of minutes if you like and it's very refreshing; another must do !!

“Soothing Sound of the river rejuvenated my soul”
Reviewed 27 November 2016
The Beas River or Vipasha is a very important river in the northern part of India. The river rises from Rohtang pass of Himalayas in central Himachal Pradesh, India, and flows for some 470 km (290 miles) to the Sutlej River in the Indian state of Punjab.

Its total length is 470 km (290 miles), and its drainage basin is 20,303 square kilometres (7,839 sq mi) large.

Heavenly Feel with the River:
Soothing Sound of the river rejuvenated my mind and soul...but this river needs cleaning action..some banks are soo dirty..
some of the places on road beside Beas..on the way to Rohtang from Manali and on the way to Manali from Kullu is very can try ilaichi tea of roadside dhaba on the bank of beas, touching the cold water...It'll give you a peaceful feel..far from work pressure...far from congested city..very close to nature..

River Beas is beautiiful, it makes the travel from shimla to manali scenic.
The white rocks along the banks of the greenish bluish coloured water add to its charm.
There are many places where one can enjoy the river.
On the way to manali from kullu, there are these awesome punjabi dhabas where one can sit out by the river and have a meal.
At Van Vihar national park in manali, a small gate leads to the river banks where one can sit on the rocks and sip hot chai and have maggi.. the experience is out of the world!
Also, one can try river rafting at manali.. do negotiate the rates and check a few places before finalising.

Beas River is so long. Flow of water is high. But we can enjoy to sit on rocks and the chill of water with the Sun setting behind the mountains with hot yummy maggie, no words to explain. Watching the flow of river and heard water sound, amazing and it’s heavenly feel.

“Biás or Bias an Amazing River”
Reviewed 9 July 2017
it was a nice feeling to wake up to the sonorous sound of the river! In Old Manali

I checked into a guest house not far from the confluence of Beas and Manalsu River. I didn’t know which river I was hearing. Maybe both. Warm morning light sieved in from the curtains and fell on my bed. Outside, my balcony overlooked an apple orchard and beyond, a majestic mountain, where the sun peaked over as if it was looking over the whole valley.

The mountain was covered with tall deodars in patches while in some areas the rocky cliffs bare it all. On the higher reaches there were no trees but rocks and sheet of snow merging together

The river is spectacular, wild and peaceful at the same time. My personal favorite spot along it is Kalath hot water springs! But you have to take these baths several times in a row for their positive effect to take place. However even after one time you'll feel rejuvenated.

Great Manali Experience”
Reviewed 7 March 2013
When to go?

As per the information that I gathered from locals, the peak season is May to June. Tourists also visit Manali during Dec-Feb to enjoy snowfall. However, I may add that the period during which I had visited, was also quite pleasant and we were also able to find snow at the Rohtang Pass.

How to go there?

Manali is not easily approachable by rail. The nearest stations are at Chandigarh (315 km), Pathankot (325 km ) and Kalka, near Shimla (310 km). Thus it may be seen that in any case one has to take a taxi from aforesaid locations.

The nearest airport is at Bhuntar which is about 50 km from Manali. Currently, Kingfisher Red & MDLR Airlines provide daily nonstop services from Delhi, Air India provides twice a week nonstop services. Of-course, this can be a bit expensive.

For middle class families, there is another option of buses. The advantages are two fold : direct connectivity and also budget suitability. I had taken Volvo bus from Delhi (Kashmiri Gate) directly upto Manali. I had booked bus online from Himachal Tourism website. The details are as follows:

One side fare per person: Rs. 970.00
Time taken: Approx. 14 hrs (One way)
Starting Time From Delhi: 8:30 PM, Reaching Time at Manali: 10:30 AM
Starting Time From Manali: 4:00 PM, Reaching Time at Delhi: 6:30 AM
Dinner stoppage at about 9:30 PM at Murthal (while going from Delhi).
Dinner stoppage at about 9:00 PM at Bilaspur (while going from Manali).

Note that apart from Himachal tourism, there are a number of other Volvo service providers and time etc might vary.

How many days should I stay?

I am specifying the minimum. This is the plan that we had followed:

1. First day: Arrival at Manali: Stroll at Mall Road, keeping it easy.

2. Second Day: Visit to Rohtang Pass. (One full day is reqd)

3. Local sight seeing of Manali : Requires half day. (Again keeping it easy as visit to Rohtang Pass was hectic)

4. Visit to Manikaran, Kullu, River Rafting etc.

5. Visit to Naggar Fort, Roerich's art gallery. Departure from Manali.

Local Transport?
A number of taxis, autos are available and so local movement is no problem. Also one can get motorcycle on hire. I had hired one, and it gave me great flexibility. Rate: Rs. 500.00 per day. Note that unlike Mount Abu or Goa, one does not get Honda Activa etc (i.e. Gear-less Scooters) here. Only motorcycles are available.

Food & stay??
Don't think about it. Veg, non-veg, Chinese/Tibetan, south Indian, continental you name it, you can have it. Since I was a veggie, and I survived pretty well. For veggies I would like to recommend 'Satyam'' a nice pure veg joint. Try out their pan-cakes.

Also Sa-Ba Restaurant (reminder: Veg + Non-Veg) was also ok. Try out sizzlers. Also Baskin Robbins has a joint just adjacent ti this restaurant, so we frequented t his place a lot.

A number of restaurants catering to specific requirements were also there i.e. serving Bengali cuisine, Andhra Bhojnalayas or Gujarati Thali etc.

Rates are quite reasonable.

There were two joints which I couldn't visit but saw a lot of firangi junta frequenting: One was Johnson's Cafe & Bar. Other was IL Forno Pizzeria. Try out if you have time.

Any language problem??
None whatsoever. Hindi / English anything would do.

Places to visit??

Rohtang Pass: Not to be missed. It is 51 Kms from Manali. Manali is at 6400 Ft. and Rohtang Pass is at 13000 Ft. So obviously this 51 km drive by road is an experience by itself. Take care of the following:

Drive take 3.5 to 4 hrs from Manali.
Fare: Rs. 1400.00 for Alto car from Manali for full day.
First check up whether snow is there at Rohtang pass.
Also check up if there is any road -bloackade / jam.
You will have to hire Dangris (boiler suit type overalls) for Rohtang pass. Also gumboots will be required. These cost us Rs. 500.00 for three persons. These are necessary as you will be moving around in / playing in snow.
We also hired skeing equipment and a guide which cost us Rs. 2000.00 more.
We also had to purchase goggles for Rs. 100.00 each covering entire eyes. My advice would be to purchase them at Manali itself as these are a must for countering the glare of snow at Rohtang Pass.
Note that closer you reach to Rohtang pass, above items will get expensive and therefore it is advisable that these are hired early.
At Rohtang Pass we found it very difficult to walk in the snow, and finally had to hire ponies. My advice would be to hire them at the outset. Rate of ponies was Rs. 400.00 per pony.
Food (Maggi / Omelette/ biscuits etc are available at Rohtang Pass also, but it is advisable to take a light meal in any of the Dhabas in the way.

2. Local sight seeing at Manali:

Hidimba Devi Mandir: Excellent. May keep it at last.
Manu Mandir: So So.
Vashisht Mandir: Worth visiting.
Buddhist Monastery: Can Visit.
Club House: Do not miss experience of River Crossing here. Children may enjoy here as a number of indoor and outdoor games are there.

Taxi (Alto car) took Rs. 500.00 for above, for half a day.

3. Visit to Manikaran:

Manikaran Sahib Gurudwara: Worth visiting. Hot Spring at manikaran is not to be missed.
River Rafting: Absolute Must. Price Rs. 450/- per head for 3 km stretch on Beas River. On the way to Kullu.
Vaishno Devi Mandir.
Visit to Kullu Shawl factories: Be careful. Visit them but don't get fleeced.
Visit to Rabbit farm for Angora wool: Do Visit but don't get fleeced.
Taxi (Alto car) took Rs. 1400.00 for above, for full day.

We took our lunch at Sanjha Chulha Restaurant, while returning from Manikaran Sahib, it was an excellent restaurant. Alternately one can take meal at the Langar at Manikaran Sahib Gurudwara.

4. Visit to Naggar Castle etc.:

Naggar Castle Visit: Nice place

Roerich Art Gallery: I found the area around this place extremely serene , calm and spent some time there. The art gallery was excellent and worth visiting. Kids might get bored here, but couples and people who want to just want to relax should not miss this place.

Jagat Sukh Temple.

Fish Farming.

To conclude, Manali visit was one of the best Hill Stations I have ever visited. I look forward to visit it again.
